Recent History
- The ranch is located on the historic Old Raton Pass and part of the Santa Fe Trail, in Colfax, Raton, New Mexico on the Colorado border.
- The ranch was part of The [1841] Maxwell Land Grant, also known as the Beaubien-Miranda Land Grant. This grant was a 1,714,765-acre piece of land granted by Mexico, located in Colfax County, New Mexico and part of Las Animas County, Colorado. It was one of the largest contiguous private landholdings in the history of the United States.
Ancient History
Toadstool Park Sandstone Formations.
- This area has been discussed as far back as 1914 in Santa Fe Trail Magazine as a visiting spot off of the Santa Fe Trail on the Old Raton Pass, Raton, New Mexico. It is littered with these formations and hundreds of ancient Native American grinding rocks or nutting holes among other things including thousands of fossils. There are several look-out spots on each ridge of the ranch where there are more of these holes. More evidence of a massive community here in our part of the Spanish Peaks of Southern Colorado and Northern New Mexico.
- Most likely the Jicarilla clans of the Apache migrated in and out of these areas. No doubt there are thousands more like these all over the Raton Basin just waiting for some TLC...
Animals & Land
Not only has the land flourished with our conservation efforts but the animals have come back in full force!
